In his article “All Writing Is Autobiographical”, Donald Murray attempts to convince his audience of fellow scholars and teachers that all writing, regardless of genre, contains within it some personal aspects of the writer. He wants his audience to acknowledge this fact so that they can allow their students to overcome the construct of keeping themselves out of their writing. He wants teachers to teach their students that inserting oneself into one’s writing is necessary and indeed impossible to do otherwise. Murray helps to overcome the construct of not using the first person in academic writing by utilizing it in his own academic writing, much like Kleine and Kantz. His use of personal narrative in this article is also reminiscent of Kleine and his story of the night library. Kantz even helps to support Murray’s claim that “all writing is autobiographical” when she freely admits that Shirley is an amalgamation of several students, herself included. I was initially taught that my writing in the school and business spheres should be objective and impersonal. Like many high schoolers, I was instructed never to use the first person in my writing if I wanted my claims to be taken seriously.

By using the first person, he shows that an author can both write autobiographically and maintain his validity in a scholarly article. By quoting his own creative writing, he can prove his point that throughout different genres, writing always contains a piece of the author, either what he was before he wrote it or what that writing made him become. 2) All writing is personal; our interests and ideas are shaped by who we are and what experiences we have had. Furthermore, what we write can change who we think we are and how we view past experiences. It is impossible to keep yourself out of your writing because writing is a creative endeavor, and therefore highly personal. Understanding what Murray has to say about all writing being autobiographical can help me in my own writing, both by opening my eyes to connections between my writing and who I am (even if I was unaware of it before), and by making me realize that it is alright and even desirable for me to explore autobiographical themes. I think Murray’s essay is highly readable, which helps to further drive home the point he is trying to make. Here we see a man allowed to explore autobiographical themes throughout his career, and we see how he has flourished not only as a creative writer, but as an academic one as well.


He could remember every book and author in a library, quoted an extensive amount of sports trivia, details about every war, complex driving instructions, birth dates of people he met, and information about movies, geography, and the space program. In protest against the segregation laws her parents sent her to public schools rather than private ones. She attended Betsy Ross Elementary School and then in 1944 Englewood High School where she encountered the children of the working class whose independence courage and struggles which would soon become the subject of her first major play she came to admire. Both schools were predominately white. Lorraine even had to fight racism from the day she walked through the doors of Betsy Ross Elementary School. Although she and her siblings enjoyed privileges unknown to their working-class schoolmates, the parents infused their children with racial pride and civic responsibility. Such white neighborhoods excluded African Americans through the then widely used restrictive covenants. Carl Hansberry, while resisting such attacks on his home and family from neighborhood hoodlums, took his case to court in order to remain there. As Lorraine Hansberry's parents fought against segregation, armed guards protected her and her siblings. But at one point a slab of concrete almost crushed Lorraine. In 1940 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled restrictive covenants unconstitutional in a case that came to be known as Hansberry v. Lee, although it did little to affect the actual practice of segregated housing in Chicago. This experience was what later inspired her writing of her most famous work, A Raisin in the Sun. Carl A. Hansberry later contributed large sums of money to NAACP and the urban league. Unfortunately he died in 1946 before he could complete plans to move his family to Mexico City when Lorraine's two brothers had difficulties accommodating to segregation in the U.S. Hansberry's interest in Africa began at an early age.

Choose an important point in your story, maybe the climax, and consider how this affected your future. Example: Who knows what would have happened if Mrs. Gracie had never kept me after class that I day. I might have fought Clyde. I might have dropped out of school. I might never have entered that pie eating contest.

How To Create Literary Fiction

As a book reviewer, I get anywhere from fifty to one hundred review requests a week. Of these, I might accept five or so. While I do occasionally take nonfiction books, most of what I accept will be in the genre known as literary fiction. But just what is literary fiction? What differentiates literary fiction from what most publishers class as commercial or genre oriented fiction, and why am I biased towards it? It's a question I get asked regularly. Some, like author David Lubar ("A Guide to Literary Fiction," 2002) equate the label with work that is pompous, dull, plotless, and overly academic: "If you're ever in doubt about whether a story is literary, there's a simple test. Look in a mirror immediately after reading the last sentence. If your eyebrows are closer together than normal, the answer is yes." Publishers often use this label for work which defies other genre distinctions, eg it isn't romance, isn't "chick-lit," isn't science or speculative fiction, isn't a thriller, action, or political drama.


These distinctions aren't always clear, and there are some superb exceptions to the genre rule, such as Margaret Atwood or China Mieville, whose high quality work fits the speculative fiction genre, or Umberto Eco and Iain Pears, whose work is full of mystery and suspense. All writers feel that their work is high quality, and most write fiction with the goal of producing great work. So how can we ensure that our work is literary fiction rather than some other form? 1. Aim for transcendency. The one quality which seems to be present in abundance in literary fiction and much less so in other forms, is what agent and author Noah Lukeman calls "transcendency." It isn't easy to define, and in his exceptional book, The Plot Thickens (St Martin's Press, 2002), Lukeman presents a number of points, such as multidimensional characters and circumstances, room for interpretation, timelessness, relatability, educational elements, self discovery, and lasting impression.


I would say that transcendency equates to depth, to writing which does more than entertain its readers, and instead, changes something, however small, in the way they perceive themselves. How do you get transcendency in fiction? With a deep theme, deep and powerful characters, complex plots, and exceptional writing skills. 2. Dos And Don’ts Of Literature Review Writing . This is a lot easier than transcendency, though not unrelated. Since achieving literary fiction is a subtle and difficult thing, you've got to develop your literary senses. The best way of doing that is to read books which fit this genre. If you want to create literary fiction, chances are, you probably are already reading it. These are books by the writers we call "great." Your list of names may differ from mine, but these are the writers who win prizes like the Booker, the Pulitzer, the Commonwealth Prize, and the National Book Award to name just a few. The more great literature you read, the better able you will become at recognising the elements which make a fiction literary.



3. Don't get defensive! Lubar's article is lots of fun, but literary fiction isn't meant to be snobbish, academic, plotless, or boring in any way; just well crafted. That may be daunting if you are a writer, but it won't help your work to shrug off quality by calling it dull or unachievable. 4. Re-write.
